Families going Forward
Unit 300 City and Guilds 3599
6 credits at Level 3
This is a five-day course which has been developed specifically for outreach and meets the development needs of practitioners working in Sure Start Children's Centres or extended schools.
The qualification unit is called "Build and maintain relationships with parents". Participants are given a framework of practice based on the National Occupational Standards for work with parents and then explore the "nine ‘C's of support": connect, contract, consider, clarify, construct, convey, coach, celebrate, conclude.
Learners are expected to do additional study hours to gather work-based evidence with the support of their manager or supervisor.

"Every participant at the Families Going Forward training could identify likely positive impacts on their outreach practice and behaviour as a result of the training. This is an excellent outcome and suggests that the Families Going Forward training offers the potential of contributing to improvements to children’s centre outreach practice and behaviour".

"I would recommend this course and let others know how valuable it is and how knowledgeable the course can make you. Also it is important if you have direct contact with families as it challenges your practice. Thank you for giving me the tools to move forward in my work with families."
Petra, Community Nursery Officer, Haringey
"The L3 WWP course is an excellent reference point which deals with the relevant theories and practices of working in partnership with parents. The 9C's is the bedrock of the course. It enables the practitioner to focus on the factors which most affect families, allowing an effective support strategy to be formed"
Donna Reece, Outreach worker, Hackney
"This course has been a great addition because it gives my staff a structured way of thinking about supporting families from beginning to the end, ensuring that they become independent and self sufficient. "
Sajini Sharma, Barnet (Manager Newstead Children Centre)
Vera is inspirational ...colleagues are thoroughly enjoying the training and are learning heaps, they especially enjoy the participatory interactive nature of each day and Vera’s warm positive approach. The staff look forward to each week and there is little quibble about having “Homework” and are appreciating why and how Vera has asked them to address each task. I’ve had sick and injured staff turn up for the course and one even said “I was so engaged I didn’t even want to leave the room to go to the bathroom in case I missed something.”
